Cyprus: A Mediterranean Gem
By Editor | | No Comments

Looking for something a bit different for your next family holiday? Then why not try Cyprus, one of the Mediterranean’s lesser-known gems? The combination of beautiful seaside towns with hilly countryside means that you can have more than a standard holiday on the beach and can explore the hidden marvels of Cyprus’s rich history.

If you’re a family with children there are plenty of things to keep both you and your kids occupied for the whole trip. Book some flights to Cyprus and you won’t be disappointed with what’s on offer.

Most hotels will have a kids’ club to keep youngsters entertained while you relax by the pool, with activities, games and adult supervision for your piece of mind. The beachfront hotels usually have access to various water sports activities, so if you fancy taking the children out on a jet-ski ride or snorkelling there will be facilities available.

Please note that while the kids’ club may have some of the water sports on offer, most of the more lively options will require your participation or at least supervision. The best beaches are on the north east of the island near Famagusta, and the north of Cyprus is traditionally less busy than the south. And parents, don’t be shy: you’ll find every beachwear style on Cyprus beaches, from the teeniest bikinis to plus size swimsuits too.

If you want to immerse the family in some culture, the Turkish-controlled area of northern Cyprus is full of ancient buildings and classic architecture. The town of Kyrenia (pictured above) has been around for thousands of years and holds many a cultural treasure within its walls. Historical sites such as St. Hilarion Castle are dotted all around the area, but choose carefully where you visit, as some of the ruins and castles in the North are in disrepair and adequate safety measures aren’t always in place.

Cyprus has a range of mountains running all across the island, known as the Troodos Mountains. They are easily accessible by car and are a completely different experience from Cyprus’s coastal towns and resorts. This means that it’s easy to combine a relaxing beach holiday with treks through the woodland hillside, mountain biking or tours round the various historical and geographical landmarks that pepper the landscape of the island’s center.

Cyprus can offer many things that make it a great choice for a family holiday with a difference. The contrasting scenery and the welcoming atmosphere mean that there will be plenty of variety and excitement.
